RESILIENCE CAFE ESSAY

Resilience CafĂ©’ Essay
Ellen Burton ~ Tritons

Indubious: Not dubious or doubtful; certain. Indubious, a band of brothers with a cause. They have lived their live with cystic fibrosis, gone through hard times but they still live to this day to talk about their disease. My uncle’s names are Evan and Spencer Burton. At the ages of 25 (Spencer) and 23 (Evan).

Many people believe that what they have is a disease and they have been cursed but my uncles look at it as a blessing to help people in similar situations. They have recently started a website called livingindubiously.com, in the website people can comment about what they think of the website and even ask them for help and advise.

In creating this website they have helped over a dozen people that have been effected by this disease. They have been hospitalized and doctors would tell them they have a small chance of living. At one point my younger uncle Evan was in the hospital and they were telling him to take anti-biotic for his treatment.

As he did his lungs deteriorated and he got sicker. The doctors weren’t sure why and they told him he only had a certain amount of time to live. He decided to stop taking the medicine and when he did his lungs began to grow back. Slowly he grew healthier and was released from the hospital. Since then both of my uncles feel they have the will power to do anything. Evan and Spencer have started to eat very healthy since a little scare when they were in their teens.

In there website they have talked with many people and many people have asked for help and they have changed the life of many people. Most of them don’t even have the disease they just know someone who has it or is wanting to help out a family member in need. They have really helped out the community of cystic fibrosis. In their quest to find out the way to give a longer life to people with cystic fibrosis they gave a speech to the cf community recently and really put some great thoughts into peoples heads.

Feature Cast From The Past

The purpose of this project understand how and why major events in history are connected and go together. An example of this is a Yarn activity. One group talked about their group and then threw a piece of yarn to the next group that had something to do with their event and so on.We had to do this project because it helped us learn about our history and connect the events all together. It also prepared us for different types of writing like in newspapers or magazines.

The project requirements are to present the 5 W's about the event to the class. The next was to write our feature artical then peer edit and then revise a feature article or podcast from another event. The next is to have 3 writing drafts inside of our writing portfolio. Next we had to present our Feature cast artical at Media Night.

I learned to write in different forms and also to use pages which is a application on macs that is an easy way to create any type of document. Some different forms of writing are newpapers, magazines, essays, write-ups, ect.

Some challenges that I had was working with pages because I had never used anything like it before but now if I had to work on it again I would know exactly what to do and be very comfortable with the program. I overcame this problem by randomly exploring the program.

It has been said that history repeats itself and with this saying I think we should know what happened before so we are aware of what might happen in the near future. I also think that we should know how our society came to be and why everything happened like it did.

My Querencia

My Querencia is the place of thing that makes me most comfortable. It is also the place where you can be yourself and you dont have a care in the world. Music is my comfort zone, not all music is my Querencia though, mainly my uncles band.

4 years ago the summer of 03' a band was born. Indubious is what they called themselves. Evan and Spencer Burton were the creators. In the summer of 05 their drummer Bob joined. Spencer playing the bass, Evan playing the keyboard, & Bob playing the drums, they created new songs. One of the reasons that they are such an inspiration to me is because Spencer and Evan have a terminal illness called cystic fibrosis. This makes the lungs weak and often they would lose their breath. Instead of letting this happen, they sing with the most amazing voices I have ever heard before. their reggae music has touched many people over the past few years. Most of all, their strong and true words have inspired me.
